Bristol started like a city around the Gloucestershire facet from the Avon, but because it grew it extended throughout the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "the city of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be individual with the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... Which it should be a county by itself".[50]
